Skin Care for Older Men

Skin care is something I didn’t think about until my early 50’s. It’s never too late but don’t wait. As we age, our skin goes through many changes, and it’s important to adapt our skin care routine to keep it healthy and looking its best. Here are some of the best skin care practices for older men.

It’s important to understand the changes that happen to our skin as we age. Collagen production decreases, causing our skin to lose elasticity and firmness. The skin also becomes thinner, drier, and more prone to wrinkles and age spots. Additionally, exposure to the sun and other environmental factors can cause further damage. Yes, the sun in small doses is great for healthy skin and vitamin D, but too much can be a problem.

Here are five tips for a successful skin care routine for older men:

  1. Cleanse regularly: Keeping your skin clean is an important step in maintaining its health. Use a gentle cleanser (I use CeraVe Hydrating Foam Cleanser) to remove dirt, oil, and dead skin cells from your face. Avoid harsh soaps or scrubs that can damage the skin.
  2. Moisturize daily: As our skin ages, it becomes drier and more prone to wrinkles. Moisturizing regularly can help to keep it hydrated and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Look for a moisturizer that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides. I am currently using CeraVe Healing Ointment a Moisturizing Petrolatum Skin Protectant
  3. Use sunscreen: Sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to skin damage and premature aging. Make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, even if it’s cloudy outside.

[Editor’s Note]

The following sun-filtering agents (Sunscreen) have been implicated with possessing estrogenic effects:

  • Benzophenone-1, 2, 3 and 4 (also known as Oxybenzone). Oxybenzone is of most concern as it is not only associated with hormone disruption but also with allergies and cell damage. In fact, a study by the Center for Disease Control revealed that 97% of Americans are contaminated with this chemical.
  • Octyl methoxycinnamate (Octinoxate)
  • 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor UV-B 4-MBC, Eusolex 6300
  1. Consider anti-aging products: There are many products available that can help to reduce the signs of aging, such as serums or creams containing retinol or vitamin C. These can help to boost collagen production and improve the overall appearance of your skin.
  2. Don’t forget your eyes: The skin around our eyes is delicate and prone to wrinkles. Look for an eye cream that’s specifically formulated to reduce puffiness and dark circles and hydrate the skin. I use CeraVe Anti-Aging Retinol Serum and it really does work. Especially under your eyes, and that’s one place an older man’s age really shows.

In conclusion, taking care of your skin is essential as you age. By following these tips and developing a consistent skin care routine, you can keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant.

As men, we really don’t get into this kind of thing, and if we do, it’s usually when we start to see the aging in our face. So, it’s never too late, but don’t wait.
